We find ourselves with an adventure that works, maintains a good rhythm, and meets the requirements of fans of the genre.” Despite the fact that we did not find an evolution of the formula, the team has wisely directed its resources. In his review for MeriStation, our own Alejandro Castillo pronounces himself in the following terms about the game: “We are satisfied after completing the long-awaited sequel to the success of Techland, this time in the hands of Dambuster Studios. The only problem lies in the technical problems and the repetitiveness of its mechanics, the main drawbacks for it to fly even higher. Straying from the open-world concept has not weighed it down, instead allowing the team to build better levels, and the gameplay, no matter how repetitive it is, is entertaining and addictive. The game does not reinvent the wheel, nor is it as big as the discovery of fire or gunpowder, but it’s downright funny. With 50 reviews total, Dead Island 2 boasts a decent 75 average score on Metacritic, where all the reviews point to the same thing. Dambuster Studios has given us a B-movie styled adventure in the pulpiest California with large doses of humor. It comes out this same April 21, 2023, and far from what it might seem after such a stormy journey, it turned out pretty good. The development of Dead Island 2 has been plagued with studio swaps, delays, and plenty of problems, but the game has finally seen the light of day. One thing’s for sure: Dead Island 2 has stiffer competition today than it did years ago. I also hate to point out that Dambuster doesn’t exactly have a stellar track record but studios have turned things around so you never know. In presence of games like The Last of Us Part II, Dying Light 2, and numerous others, I’m not sure how well Dead Island 2 will do especially considering the first game was nothing to write home about. Opinion: Dead Island 2 is a little late to the zombie party In 2019, parent company THQ Nordic announced that it handed over development to Dambuster, but little has been heard about the game since then with the exception of a job advertisement that seemingly confirmed next-gen versions and a leaked early build of Yager’s Dead Island 2. Publisher Deep Silver greenlit a pitch by Yager Development but both companies parted ways over differences in creative vision, later resulting in Yager filing for bankruptcy. Dead Island 2 was supposed to be developed by Techland but the studio went ahead with Dying Light.
